The sound of electric razors could be heard over the pop music and children having a great time at this year’s St. Baldrick’s Event, the energy in the room was contagious as patrons made their way around the Hannum gym to take a peek at the raffle table, or grab a snack, get their face painted or snap a picture from the photo booth with friends. Friday March 3 marked the 5th Annual St. Baldrick’s Event for Hannum Elementary School which has raised more than $100,000 for the organization and has become a tradition in our community.
“We like our kids to realize that even though they are small, they are mighty and that when we work together as a team, we can do amazing things. We are so proud of our 5-11 year olds, that in 4 years we have raised over 100,000.00 for kids cancer. It really makes us proud and since we have been doing this for 5 years, our kids have grown up with it and it is now part of our culture,” said Principal of Hannum, Anne Marie McGovern.
Cheers and tears ran throughout the crowd as best friends, Angelina, Lily and Mia took the stage first, to have their long hair shaved off in support of other children fighting cancer, more than 40 students signed up to have their heads shaved throughout the night as well. All proceeds from snacks to the raffle tickets went to St. Baldrick’s. This year hopes were high to raise $25,000 and that number was greatly surpassed, the final total for the event was $26,600!
